Nakama Bay Savusavu
The Club
The Nakama Bay Savusavu Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in 2009. Most of the founding members were very young and had paddled for fun in Savusavu for quite a while. Our club is open to people from all ages and backgrounds. We paddle every afternoon 5pm in our v6 and v4 canoes.
Our beautiful bay offers exciting paddling either in the Savusavu marina along town, to little islands and beaches, through calm and sheltered waters or crossing the open sea.
Our coaches teach beginners the techniques, advanced paddlers train for competitions. Our club is one family and we help each other improving our skills. We aim to become a recognized paddling location in Fiji. We will hold our first fiji wide Marathon Regatta in Savusavu Bay in November 2010.
Our Motto
Nakama - in fijian "to burn" refers to the Hot Spring of Savusavu. Our club is situated just opposite at the Wai Tui Marina where the sea water is thermal too. But also it shows the motto of our club - the strong local bond and the way we paddle with "fire" burning in our hearts. Our club logo symbolizes that. The paddler rising from a vulcano. Our club understands outrigger canoeing as a true pacific sport and as a cutural statetment as well. We combine sport and cultural activities.
Sport
But we want to be competitive in our sport as well. Our coach Selau Celua taught us how to paddle, techniques and canoe handling etc. We had only one old canoe when we started. Finally we decided to bring our sport to another level and compete in regattas. We are a member of the Fiji Outrigger Association since 2010 and offer organised training every day. We held Outrigger clinics in New year with our club member Tania Mullane a NZ Outrigger Rep (her mother from Vanua Levu).
Competitions
In April 2010 our girls U19 team participated in its first Regatta - the Waitui International 2010 with a gold medal in the 15 km marathon. What a succes for our young club. It proofed that we have the talents here and for the future we aim to get more people from Savusavu interested in Outrigger canoeing. Now we have three v6, 1 v4 and v1.

In November 2010 we will host our first fiji wide Marathon Regatta.
Training
We offer Paddling every weekday from 5 pm at the Wai Tui Marina and Saturday from 2 pm. New paddlers please come on monday 5 p.m .or saturday at 2p.m.
We have 2 v6 canoes and 2 v1 canoes.
