Takia

The Takia Outrigger Canoe Club (Takia) was established in 1994 and was originally based at the Royal Fiji Yacht Club. From those humble beginnings, we have evolved into a major community sports organization, watching Outrigger canoeing evolve from a "foreign" sport into an integral part of our lives.
Takia is a well established, non-profit organization which provides its members with an opportunity to be part of a sporting family that promotes Healthier Lifestyles, Team Work, Respect for the Environment, and Natural Talent all in the name of ‘outrigger canoeing’.

Takia is comprised of paddlers from all walks of life, from the littlest ‘kaiviti’ to the biggest ‘fulla’ on the block whose focus, other than to enjoy every moment, is to master the sport of outrigger canoeing. Some have been paddling since the sport first began in Fiji while others are fresh in the boat (FIB's...aka novices).
Our paddlers are proudly dedicated to competition, good sportsmanship and most importantly, value of family.  In 2008 Ocean's Pacific merged their club with Takia to strengthen the existing talents and experience and elevate the sport of outrigger as a whole.

2008 Club Goals:

Takia Outrigger Canoe Club currently owns five 6-men canoes. Our teams consist of two open men and two open women’s teams. Our members consist of approximately 40 members who range from first time novices to national athletes who have competed at world competitions. While the level of skill varies with each paddler, we all share a passion and respect for this traditional and unique water sport. Our team motto is, “Strive for the best on and off the water!”

Our specific goals for the 2008 season include:
 • Increasing our visibility in Fiji and the Pacific
 • Recruiting new members
 • Forming competitive open women, men and junior teams

As a team, we embrace Fijian culture and value community. For the 2009 season, we hope to recruit more paddlers so that we may share an ancient tradition with as many members of the community as possible and continue to keep it alive.

Our race committee is committed to both racing competitively and exposing members to the race experience, often sending several crews to each race.

Takia Outrigger Canoe Club welcomes all paddlers of any skill level to join us on the water. We practice weekly in-season at the club site. For more information contact us.
